Location: Jay Cooke State Park, MN
In June 2012, a combination of severe flooding, steep slopes, and severely nutrient-deficient soils closed and delayed the reopening of a two-mile stretch of scenic Highway 210 in Jay Cooke State Park, Minnesota. As a result, the prime contractor sought innovative methods — beyond just topsoil — of re-establishing vegetation there.
A design/build team, led by senior management in VEIT’s Duluth office and assisted by engineering and environmental consultants from BARR and SRF, put out a Call for Innovation to manufacturers interested in displaying their solutions onsite. In response, 13 test panels — including a compost panel — were installed. Working with state and local experts and consultants, LSC’s engineers and scientists provided a TRM hydraulic infill solution, utilizing industry’s best management practices, including our BSA technology Organix™.
Results: After multi-party deliberations and a third-party evaluation, the design/build team chose LSC’s Vegetative Rehabilitation System as 1) the best onsite results; 2) the most cost-effective solution; and 3) the easiest installation system — the industry’s only one-step solution. In the year since the original panels were installed by LSC, the predominantly native seed blend’s density and performance have met ongoing site expectations with excellent diversity. The site has endured a Minnesota winter, and vegetation growth has been established through a TRM system.
